3 things I WISH I’d known as a new coach

Picture this: I’m sitting in my office, baby on my lap, knowing there are a million things I could do to grow my coaching business but I’m freakin’ stumped. I feel like I don’t really know what I’m doing! It’s like I’m in this massive ocean with a boat and a paddle and I need to paddle, but I don’t exactly know if I’m doing it right.

Over the last 13 years, I've made A LOT of mistakes. These mistakes have taught me so much, eventually helping me create my dream business. However, there are still some things I really wish I'd known!

There were things I didn’t KNOW that made it hard for me. That’s it! It wasn’t talent or luck or magic. I just hadn’t been TAUGHT some things that became game-changers for me and my business.

Here are a few nuggets of wisdom I wish I’d known in the early days:

  1. **Diverse Business Models**: When I first dove into the world of coaching, I was taught one business model, which I’ll boil down to “an online business that will earn $100K.” Little did I know, there's a myriad of options! From side hustles where you do operations and contracting gigs where you don’t, to full-time employment, a lifestyle business, and building your own company. If you don’t know your business model, you’ll likely fall into a default model of what you do know, which might resemble a J.O.B.

  1. **Mindset Matters**: It's easy to blame external factors for why things aren’t working, but everything can change when your mindset changes. Often, this starts with forgiveness, self-compassion, and seeking out the fun (yes, FUN) of growing your business. Investing in mindset work and coaching yourself is crucial for overcoming hurdles and unlocking your full potential.

  1. **Mentoring Matters**: What do all senior leaders in corporations have? Mentors. What do therapists have? A preceptor who serves as a mentor and guide in their early years. Thankfully, I did have this one in my early years because I had a coach who became a mentor for me, but that was somewhat by accident. Without her help, I know I would have struggled with my new-found coaching tools.

Bonus Tip: **Community is Key**: We need love and support and community. Paddling alone when you feel lost can be scary, but paddling with friends is a different experience. Surrounding yourself with a supportive community of fellow coaches with different ideas and perspectives is invaluable.

Why try to figure this stuff out on your own?

Get support.

Be a part of an incredible community.

Get your questions answered.

Grow that business, my fabulous coach friend, grow it.
